The Shadows Below (Northern Lights Novels) by Hugh Gibbins eBook review

An acrid cloud of greed and corruption hangs over the open pit mines of the Alberta oil sands. Aboriginal politicians prove to be no less susceptible to its effects than the shady front-men of multi-national oil companies. Traditional roles are reversed, old enemies become bedfellows – and one young scientist is caught in the middle of a deadly web of lies and deceit.

Andrew Miller’s life is turned upside down when he witnesses the brutal murder of an aboriginal man while conducting an environmental survey on a small oil sands lease. Threatened by the murderers and warned not to go to the police, he is faced with an agonizing dilemma: can he, in good conscience, stay quiet, or can he somehow shed light on the murder without bringing harm to himself and his loved ones?

Andrew unwittingly stumbles across the identity of one of the murderers, and he and his girlfriend begin to unravel the threads of a multi-billion dollar international conspiracy that threatens to tear a small aboriginal community apart. But the murderers’ suspicions are aroused when Andrew asks one question too many – and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. With time running out, Andrew turns in desperation to an enigmatic aboriginal elder who might be able to interpret his strange and recurring dream of a white buffalo calf. Will the elder – and the dream – help him to elude his pursuers and expose the conspiracy, or will Andrew be powerless to prevent his own murder?

The Shadows Below is a fast-paced suspense novel that paints a portrait of a community struggling to deal with vast cultural change – and of the dark side of human nature that lurks just below the surface.

MY REVIEW

I jumped to the chance to review this book because it is a story in Canada and the author is Canadian and I have to admit I do not read enough book that are written by Canadians. Anyways, I read this book yesterday and last night in bed and I have to admit this is very well written and I enjoyed it so much that I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book.
